i had wanted to post this photo walk at the end of august but it's happening now ... i thought it would be fitting with back to school shopping that i highlight one of the big attractions of our city - west edmonton mall ... lots of people hate it, but i'm not one of them ... i have a long, fond history with this shopping centre ... growing up on an acreage just on the western outskirts of the city in the late 70's the mall was a much anticipated building that would finally give west-enders a new modern place to shop ... phase I opened in 1981 and i had my first retail job at one of the stores ... our high school grad committee decorated the mall for christmas one year to raise funds for our graduation ... i modelled in fashion shows there ... i attended both the second and third phase opening parties ... our family spent many a winter at the waterpark & galaxy land amusement park utilizing our family attraction pass ... my kids both attended a music school in the mall for 12 years ... we've hosted several kid's birthday parties there ... claudia had her first retail job at victoria secret ... and it is my go-to place to shop ... i can't say i visit weekly anymore, but i'm there at least twice a month ... some people don't like it because it's so large, but if i know what stores i'm hitting, i park near them ... but i also don't mind walking up and down the mall ... it's great exercise as the length of the mall spans close to 6 city blocks ... and i love the fact that pretty much every store i need, is there ... plus you can eat, swim, see a movie, ice-skate, ride a rollercoaster, shop, buy groceries, watch a comedy show, bar-hop, bowl, sleep, spa or mini golf ... our hairdresser, eye doctor, photo developer, tailor and cobbler are all at the mall ... and it's all 5 minutes from my house ... what's not to love??!!
since the mall is such a familiar place for me, i tried to see it through a different lens and capture details ... i was looking for interesting textures, light, patterns, shapes and colours ... the mall has been renovating so there's lots of new things to notice ... and of course i had my shopping partner in crime/photo walk assistant - miss c with me!! (the boy has a fear of being caught at the mall with his parents, so avoids being there with us at all costs ... although i must say this phobia is slowly passing!!)
with the renovation, there have been a lot of new mobile-type art installations appearing and lots of interesting light fixtures ...
there are fewer and fewer reasons to head down south for my annual girls shopping trip ... shhhh don't tell my hubbie ... and no i am not getting paid for this post nor do i work in marketing or advertising for the mall!!! just a proud edmonton girl giving a little shout out to one of our many highlights in this city!!
leave me a comment if you've photo walked your favourite mall lately!
